Estelle Getty, the petite actress best known for her role as tough-talking Italian matriarch Sophia Petrillo on TV's The Golden Girls, has passed away. Getty died on Tuesday at her Los Angeles home. She was 84 years old. She is survived by her son, Carl Gettleman.
The New York-born Getty suffered from advanced dementia and had been little-seen in public over the past several years. Getty struggled as an actress for over forty years before landing the plum role of Sophia in 1985. The Golden Girls was extremely popular on NBC during its 1985-1992 run, with Getty nabbing a Golden Globe in 1986 and an Emmy in 1988 for her portrayal of the feisty, sarcastic mother.
